380 million cell-phone users on the continent in 2008 ! That’s almost one African out of three. That was the conclusion of a market survey by WCIS. Despite the crisis the number of mobile phones rose by 35% last year. 12 out of the 20 fastest growing markets were in Africa, including countries such as Gabon and South Africa. Nigeria is still the continent’s principal market with 60 million subscribors. Growth figures that will no doubt boost competition between major operators such as ZAIN, ORANGE and MTN.
