Kenyan Floods Kill and Displace Residents

FloodsThe Kenya Red Cross Society Monday continued with search and rescue efforts in areas affected by floods which have killed at least eleven people across Kenya.

In Isiolo the organisation has started distributing non-food items to 120 households in Garfasa area in Garbatula, following the floods that displaced over 200 families and killed some 200 goats and sheep.

The District Disaster Committee has advised residents to move to higher grounds.

In Samburu, at least 600 staff of the tourist lodges that were affected by raging waters after Ewaso Nyiro river burst its banks are camping in tents on a hill as their houses remain flooded and the hotels closed.

"We have provided relief aid to 70 of those affected - blankets, kitchens sets, bar soaps, mosquito nets and jerricans. Food and clean water is urgently required by the displaced people" said KRCS Communication Manager Titus Mung'ou.

In North Rift, a second wave of floods in Kerio River, in Lokori, Turkana East, destroyed irrigation canals, during the weekend, sweeping away 50 goats.

More than 300 families have been advised to move to higher grounds. The floods have also rendered the Turkana-Marich road is impassable due to floods.

In Moyale, in Upper Eastern Region, heavy winds blew off roof tops of three classrooms, a store and an administration block in Anone Primary School. However the Eastern Provincial Commissioner Claire Omollo said the floods had subsided.

At least 10,000 people have been affected by the floods, landslides and heavy rains across the country.

The Meteorological department has warned that the heavy rains will continue for the next two months.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Uganda, half a million people will need to be moved from their homes in mountainous areas because of the risk of mudslides, the government has said.
